Workshop Description

This workshop program is designed to orient and train faculty candidates in the University's model of Adult Education. All new faculty candidates are required to complete this training as a condition of employment. Each workshop consists of four hours of training to be facilitated by a core of faculty who are specially trained to conduct the training.

At the conclusion of training, faculty candidates will be expected to demonstrate a thorough understanding, as well as endorse with reservation, the value of facilitation in the learning process. Through workshop discussions and activities, faculty candidates will develop a knowledge base about University of Phoenix policies, procedures, and administrative requirements, as well as an improvement in their interpersonal abilities.

  • Week 1:   Facilitation
  • Week 2:   Evaluation and Grading
  • Week 3:   Interaction Skills
  • Week 4:   Study Groups and Student Issues
  • Week 5:   Administration

Workshops are held on weeknights from 6:00 PM  to 10:00 PM.
Dress Code is Professional Business Attire.

Workshop Course Objectives
1. Identify the characteristics of the self-directed Adult Learner. Prepare for participation, and practice facilitation in role playing situations.
2. Monitor and evaluate students' efforts to master learning objectives and define grading criteria to include student participation as a grading factor.
3. Exhibit interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to the UOP learning environment, as well as reinforce among students the usefulness of professional communication skills in the work place.
4. Identify and participate in a study group and become familiar with relevant student issues.
5. Identify administrative procedures for handling grades, student absences, attendance, classroom disputes, etc. Reflect an understanding of UOP support systems.
6. Practice facilitation skills through role playing, written assignments, study groups, and peer evaluation.

Workshop Outcomes
1. Through role playing, written assignments, study groups, and peer evaluation, and practice, demonstrate interpersonal facilitative skills and techniques.
2. Through practice peer evaluations and small group activities, demonstrate an understanding of student evaluations and grading techniques.
3. Through participation in facilitation activities, develop interpersonal and communication skills necessary to facilitate the process of adult learning.
4. Though a written report, demonstrate mastery of the University's administrative procedures for handling grades, classroom disputes, student absences, attendance, etc.,as well as an understanding of the role of support systems and the requirement for on-going faculty in-services training.
